Sunday, June 30th -- We left early and headed for the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, just slightly south of Gatlinburg and inside the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. It is a 5.5 mile one-lane road that meanders thru the woods, and has the remains of 4 old homesteads from the 19th century, and a really awesome waterfall, all right next to the road, so no hiking required.
The first house was the Bud Ogle homestead, and we did want to walk General around a little bit, so we took the nature trail at this homestead. You can buy a guide for $0.50 which gives some information about the different markers on the trail. What we didn't realize was that the trail goes thru heavy woods over lots of tree roots and very large rocks, crosses the creek several times, sometimes with just a stone walkway, other times with a fallen tree cut flat. It was a very strenuous trail, but General had a blast, and so did we. LOL. This homestead included a house and barn and root cellar, along with a small mill quite some ways away by the creek.

And the waterfall, called "The Place of a Thousand Drips", was pretty awesome and right next to the road!
The road in some places got very narrow, with trees and/or rocks on both sides of the road that we had to squeeze between, and there were huge drop offs on the side, so it was a bit of a nerve wracking drive in some spots. But we did it, and had alot of fun!
