Wednesday, October 16 -- Today, our objective was to drive a little bit of Route 66!
But first, we had to get gas for the truck, and we noticed this underground storm shelter at the gas station! Wow! Tornadoes are very scary!
We got on Route 66 just north of Carthage. And that's where we spotted this cute piece of lawn art. Take a look at this flying tractor at the Flyin' W Convenience Store! LOL.
This hotel (now a Best Budget Inn) has been around since the early Route 66 days. But it's been very well cared for and almost looks like new!
Route 66 goes south from Carthage, and right thru the middle of Joplin. On the west side of Joplin, we came across the Historic Route 66 Drive In Theatre.

Still heading west.
In Galena, Kansas, they have this awesome mural on the side of a building!
Our drive on Route 66 amounted to about 28 miles. Then we decided to stop at the tri-state point (Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma). Ed is trying to stand on THE EXACT POINT! LOL.
Then we visited the Joplin Museum Complex. They had a very interesting exhibit about mining in the area. So many different kinds of rocks and minerals!
Some of them actually glow in the dark...naturally!

They have a small exhibit with Route 66 collectibles!
And a really nice exhibit about what life was like here back in the 1800s, and about some of the people who lived here during that time!
And here is the National Cookie Cutter Museum! Probably the smallest museum...ever!

And an exhibit about the infamous Bonnie and Clyde! They had rented a garage apartment during their stay in this area, and when they had to leave, they left behind some pictures and a few personal items. These are supposedly the first pictures ever taken or found of the infamous couple.
Then we were off to find Bonnie and Clyde's garage apartment!
Found it!
On our way home, we decided to stop at the George Washington Carver National Monument. It was near closing time for the day, but we were able to get a stamp for our Passport book, and read the exhibits in the main museum area. What an awesome man! So smart and industrious! He made a ton of discoveries in the medicine and agriculture fields!
