Thursday, August 15th -- Determined to be more prepared this time, we decided to leave General at home for this excursion. And since it would be a long day, we hired a sitter to come and feed him and take him for his evening walk. The sitter was the daughter of the camp host, so we figured we couldn't go wrong.
We got out the door right on schedule and headed for town to catch the ferry to the island. Having a fascination with the construction of the Mackinac Bridge, we were blessed to find the 12:30 ferry also includes a side excursion to the bridge, with a little history of the bridge being told over the loud speakers.
Once again, the view of the Grand Hotel from the water was awesome!
We got into town and picked up our bikes right away, then started off on our planned route around the island.

The first part was the hardest since we had to walk our bikes straight up hill, but from then on, we were on somewhat level ground. But, wow, when we got up there, the view was so worth it!
We rode right past the Fort, knowing it was on our list to visit later in the day.
Our first stop was Arch Rock, a natural limestone arch which stands about 146 feet above the water line. Beautiful! And yes, the water is that blue!
Our next stop was Sugarloaf Rock, another natural limestone rock. Not as pretty as Arch Rock, but a natural phenomena, nonetheless. LOL.

After a couple of wrong turns, we found the West Bluff and its gorgeous old homes!
The view from the West Bluff was nothing less than amazing!
More of the island's wonderful horses, giving some folks a carriage tour.
And then around the corner, we were standing in front of the Grand Hotel, which is impossible to take pictures of, because it is just that huge! LOL.

We turned in our bicycles and explored the downtown area on foot. The lady at the bike shop recommended a restaurant for dinner, and she was right on the mark! Mary's Bistro Draught House had awesome food!
We walked around town, checking out some of the other historic buildings.
Then we headed to the Fort. And amazingly enough, we didn't take any pictures of the Fort from street level so you could see how high up it was and the steep path we needed to climb to get there. LOL. But after 3 hours of bicycling, and another hour of walking around, climbing that hill was the last thing we wanted to do. But we did it, and it was so worth it.
The buildings inside the Fort are pretty much as they were way back then, and they had them set up to display how they would have been used back then. It was all pretty awesome! And of course, many cannons scattered all over the property.
And the view from the Fort of the Harbor was wonderful!
We got back home around 8pm, and found General was fine. We found out the next day that the sitter had actually kept him for longer than we had agreed upon, because she was having so much fun playing with him. LOL. So that made us feel good to know he was well taken care of.
