On Wednesday, May 29th, we visited the Greater Foscoe Mining Company, which was less than a mile from our campground. Yes, I realize this is just one of those tourist trap thingies, but there used to be a gem mining place on the Outer Banks and we went there on a regular basis, just because it was something we really enjoyed doing. After lunch, we decided to take in a waterfall, mostly for General's sake, cuz he really seems to like the hikes. We chose Otter Creek Falls, mainly because it was very close to the campground, and because we had read really good reviews on Google and people said this was an easy hike. We should have realized something was not as it should be when we climbed the very steep hill through the community of Seven Devils. Yup, that's right, Seven Devils. We even passed by Seven Devils Town Hall and Fire Department. LOL. When we got to the parking lot, we should have paid more attention to the sign at the trailhead. But we didn't, and we started our descent. Down... down... down we went, switchback after switchback, crossed a creek, more downhill, a lookout that showed we still had quite a ways to go, then another lookout, and then finally the stairs. Good lord! But... Ed got some great butterfly and waterfall pictures, and General had an awesome time in the water.
Then we started back up the trail, stopping several times to rest along the way. When we finally reached the parking lot, we noticed the sign. UGH! It clearly says "Strenuous Hike"!
