Sunday, October 20th -- Today we headed south to Kingston, OK, which is right near the Texas border!
After having already spent 7 hours on Route 66, traveling between locations and stopping to see all the attractions on Route 66, we decided NOT to do that again. The roads weren't all that great for pulling the trailer on, and it was just too exhausting to add so much activity to a travel day. Plus the weather was starting to get cold again, so we knew we wanted to head farther south. So we said goodbye to Route 66, for now! We took Route 66 only from our campground to Stroud, and then headed south!
On the way, we were able to catch this historic Skyliner Motel!
We really wanted to stop to see the Shoe Tree near Stroud, which is one of the more popular attractions on Route 66, but it was on a side road, and when we got to that point, we saw the road was kind of grown over, and it didn't look like we could go down it without scratching our truck and trailer on the overhanging branches, so we had to pass it up!

We were nervous about what our new campsite at Caney Creek Recreation Area (another Army Corps of Engineers campground and only $7 per night) was going to look like, because we couldn't see much of it on Google Maps because of all the trees around it. But we were very pleasantly surprised to find we were off in a corner with no neighbors close to us at all!
That night, we were expecting a severe thunderstorm, and when Ed checked out the trees around us, he decided to move the truck to a different location on our campsite that he felt would be safer. Our tiny house was rocking like crazy that night.
When we woke up in the morning, we found a ton a downed branches were the truck WAS parked, but nothing on where the truck is now! So blessed! But our neighbor didn't make out quite so well!
A huge branch fell right onto his fifth wheel trailer! The couple were OK, but water was leaking in pretty bad, so they grabbed all of their stuff and went someplace else. So, what happens next in a case like this? The guy called his insurance company and found they would probably total the trailer because of all the water damage. And then we just waited for someone to come get the tree off.
