Tuesday, October 8th -- Once again, we headed back to Dodge CIty. This time to explore the Train Depot!
They have preserved the part of the Depot that was a Harvey House. Pretty interesting story behind this.
The hotel lobby was well preserved, and also one of the guest rooms upstairs.
They also have two very well preserved old 19th century sundials on the Depot property, one for Central Time and one for Mountain Time.

Since it was still pretty early in the day, we decided to take a look at the Dalton Gang Hideout, in Meade Kansas. Which meant driving back to Cimarron, where our RV park was, and then heading a ways south. When we got there, all we saw was a small house, with the entrance blocked off, and a barn. Not quite sure what we were walking into, we headed for the barn, and saw the entrance. LOL.
Just to fill you in, the Dalton Gang was an infamous group of outlaw guys who managed to pull on bank and stagecoach robberies for many years before they were caught. Eva Dalton Whipple was their sister, and she and her husband lived in this small house with the barn.
The house was built on the side of a hill, as was the barn below. There was a basement level to the house, and from that basement level, they dug a tunnel out of the house and into the ground floor of the barn. Even after the Dalton Gang was captured, the tunnel had not been discovered. Several years later, the Whipple's left the house abandoned, and the house was eventually sold. It was the new owners who found the tunnel, hidden in the back of a closet.
We also visited the Meade, Kansas Historical Museum, which had a bunch of exhibits about the local history, along with exhibits of how businesses and homes would have looked back in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Very well done, and highly recommended. Such a treasure to find in a very small town!

They have this shepherd's wagon on display. Pretty interesting to see how they are set up with everything you could possibly need, and sleeping space. This would be the travel trailer of the 19th century! LOL.
