The Laura Ingalls Wilder Highway!

Sunday, August 25th -- This travel day takes us to Pepin WI. Our route included mostly state highways, since Pepin isn't exactly a popular place.

So... why did we go to Pepin WI? Because it's one of the stops on the Laura Ingalls Wilder highway! You know... Little House on the Prairie! This wasn't something on the top of our list when we were leaving home, but when we found out it was close to our location, we jumped on the chance to see some of this history!

Lake Pepin Campground was pretty cool! It is a HUGE campground. I mean really HUGE! There are about 200 campsites, and they have it set up like a mobile home park, all neatly in rows. Most of the campsites are for seasonal folks. I think they may only have about a dozen spots for overnight folks. So, needless to say, this late in the season, we didn't see many people here.

We didn't realize until we got there that the small town of Pepin is on the banks of the Mississippi River! Yes, the Mississippi! This is one of those things we just never thought we would see, and it blew us away!

Actually, the Mississippi River is so wide in this location that they actually named the eastern section Lake Pepin. And it freezes over in the winter!

​Downtown, they have a historical marker dedicated to Laura Ingalls Wilder.

There is also a very small depot museum downtown, but it never opened the whole time we were in town. 

It looked like it had a pretty cute display set up inside.
