Our next campground was Raccoon Holler Campground in West Jefferson, NC. Why did we pick this? Well... we actually didn't. It kind of picked us. LOL.
On Monday, May 20th, I called our preferred next campground to make reservations (yes, we prefer to do it that way), and found out they were totally booked because of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
So... not thinking anything of it, I called the office for the place we were currently at and asked if we could extend our stay there. To my surprise, they said they were totally booked for the weekend as well. Now I was getting nervous, and the anxiety increased rapidly as I called EVERY campground between where we were and where we wanted to be, even on routes that we didn't want to take, and found they were all booked for the holiday weekend. One campground did say they might have something available that hadn't yet been confirmed, and to try back in the morning. I was at my wits end, and around 6pm that evening I decided to call the one campground back and leave a message, pleading to them to give us the unconfirmed space, and telling her that we were fulltimers and didn't have anyplace else we could go. Helen from Raccoon Holler called me back in the morning and said she did have a place for us due to a cancellation, and I booked it right away.
So... we left for Raccoon Holler on Thursday, May 23rd, by way of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The only thing that surprised us was the road (Highway 221) leading up to the Parkway, which was very steep and very curvy. For those of you who are wondering how our half-ton Chevy is doing on these hills.... no problems so far, and we can still gain speed going uphill while pulling the trailer. Driving the Parkway was awesome! And we will be showing some footage of that drive on an upcoming video. The Parkway had very little traffic, I guess since it was during the week, so we were able to stop at almost every overlook. At the first overlook we stopped at, there were two ladies driving around taking pictures, and we spent quite a bit of time chatting with them about photography opportunities in the area.

So... the drive that should have only taken about an hour and a half, ended up taking three and a half hours, because of all of our stops. But it was so worth it! We arrived at Raccoon Holler, and they escorted us to our site at the back of the campground, at the top of the hill. We took our showers and went to sit outside, just in time to see this!
Wow! Paradise found! After walking all around the campground, we realized we had the absolute most perfect spot in the whole place, and we savored every moment.
Our neighbors were some wonderful folks - Allison, Kyle and their daughters Olivia, as well as Allison's father (Phil), her sister and her husband, and their two daughters. General had so much fun playing with the girls, and they all gave him a ton a loving. Phil talked to us about traveling, and shared some stories of RVing with his wife (who unfortunately had passed away suddenly last year). Raccoon Holler Campground really is in the middle of nowhere, so while we did drive to the nearest town for supplies, we didn't do much else that weekend. Just enjoying the breeze coming over the mountain, and those fabulous sunsets! Continue reading below...

We were still having trouble with the shut off valve for the one gray tank, and after calling a mobile mechanic, and waiting several hours for him to stop by, Ed decided to tackle the problem himself. He found a YouTube video showing the solution to the problem, and he made the repair, which ended up being fairly easy. LOL. Gotta love YouTube!
So... we are giving Raccoon Holler Campground and the Blue Ridge Parkway a huge thumbs up!!
