After 5 weeks of looking everywhere for a good deal, we finally purchased our new truck!! 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab! We got a great deal, and we are very happy with it! Does your truck have a 110AC receptacle in the center console? So... did you also know that all Chevy Silverado 1500's are NOT created equal? They are actually available as either a V6 or a V8 engine. And even all V8 engine trucks are not the same. They come in 2 different rear axle gear ratios, and only one of those is good for towing. The 3.08 gear ratio is only capable of hauling about 7,000 pounds. Where the 3.42 gear ratio is capable of hauling 9,000. How do you know which gear ratio your truck has? RPO codes. Inside your glove box (usually), there is a sticker that looks something like this... In addition to noting your vehicle's VIN number, each of those codes has a meaning about a particular part of your vehicle. To find out what they all mean, you can go to RPOCODES.com. The 3.42 gear ratio is GU6 code. And we also know from the RPO codes that our truck has the special towing package (code Z82).
The larger the rear axle gear ratio the better it is for towing, but it also makes your gas mileage worse. Which is where Chevy's EcoBoost technology comes into play. This is awesome! They designed the engine so that it will very quickly kick into V8 mode when needed. But when the truck is running at a steady speed or cruising thru town, it will shut off 4 of those cylinders and operate as a V4. So... power when you need it, and better gas mileage when you don't. The best of both worlds! So we are very happy with our new truck! Next up... the travel trailer!! We plan to look at some trailers in a couple of weeks. Thanks again for joining us on this journey! We'd love to hear your comments, questions and suggestions down below.
