Friday, December 6, 2019 -- Exploring Catalina State Park's many trails has been alot of fun, and we learned so much!
In the center of this picture, the fuzzy looking plant is a Cholla Cactus. They grow to a standard bush size.
Here is what their skeletons look like! And its wood!

The Palo Verde tree has a green trunk and branches, and it grows seed pods. The ancient civilizations ground up these seeds to use as flour.
Catalina State Park has a horse camping area, so they put in these "Hitchin' Posts" near the restrooms and pavilions. LOL.
General loved walking all the trails!

The Romero Ruins Trail is within the park, so we decided to check it out!
You have to cross this huge wash to get to the trail. Luckily, it hasn't rained in awhile, and the wash was dry!
At the top of a small ridge, and covering about 15 acres, is the remains of an ancient Hohokam Indian Village. The view from the ridge was pretty awesome!

Based on archaeological digs, it has been determined that the Hohokam Indians lived at this settlement from about 500 to 1450 AD, and may have included from 125-200 people. This is an ancient trash mound.
In the late 1800s, Francisco Romero and his family made this site their home, and you can see the remains of his house here.
