Friday, December 1, 2019 (continued) -- So... how did the town of Truth or Consequences get its name?
The town was originally called Hot Springs, New Mexico. In 1950 there was a competition held by a game show called "Truth or Consequences" challenging a town anywhere in the US to change its name to the name of the game show. After a vote on March 31st, 1950, the town of Hot Springs officially changed its name the following day, April 1st, 1950 to Truth or Consequences. Every year there is a fiesta to celebrate the name change, although rumour has it there are some in town who have held out and still have their post addressed to Hot Springs, New Mexico!

In another room, they have placards for each of the surrounding small towns in this area. There is some pretty rich history around here, if you are willing to drive a bit to see it!
When we left Truth or Consequences, we drove past the campground and into the Caballo Dam day use area to catch a glimpse of the Rio Grande River. Right after the dam, the river is pretty tame. Not at all what we were expecting. But this really is the Rio Grande River that flows down toward El Paso and the Mexican Border! This is just another one of those things we thought we would never see!
