Raccoon Holler Campground Review: Peaceful RV Camping in North Carolina
Finding a campground over Memorial Day weekend can be a challenge.
As campgrounds filled up across North Carolina, we found ourselves with very few options. Raccoon Holler Campground was one of the only places with an available campsite, and although it cost a little more than our usual camping budget, we decided to book it.
Looking back, we’re glad we did.
From spacious campsites and towering trees to peaceful walking paths and beautiful sunsets, Raccoon Holler turned out to be one of the most relaxing campgrounds we visited during our travels.
Here’s what we discovered during our stay.
A Quiet Wooded Setting
One of the first things we noticed after arriving was just how peaceful the campground felt.
Nestled among mature trees, the campground offers a quiet atmosphere that immediately encourages you to slow down and enjoy your surroundings.
Even during a busy holiday weekend, it never felt crowded.
Instead, the spacious layout gave every campsite its own sense of privacy.
If you’re looking for a campground where you can actually hear the birds instead of your neighbors, Raccoon Holler does an excellent job.
Spacious RV Sites
We stayed in one of the pull-through RV sites near the back of the campground.
Our campsite offered plenty of room for both our travel trailer and truck, with generous space separating us from neighboring campers.
Although the sites are located near one of the campground roads, traffic was extremely light, and we rarely noticed anyone driving past.
That combination of convenience and privacy made our campsite especially enjoyable.
Beautiful Pond and Fishing Pier
Near the campground entrance is a lovely pond that quickly became one of our favorite places to relax.
A wooden fishing pier extends out over the water, providing a peaceful place to sit and enjoy the scenery.
During our visit we watched several geese swimming across the pond while campers relaxed nearby.
Although swimming isn’t permitted, the pond creates a beautiful focal point for the campground and adds to its peaceful atmosphere.
It’s the perfect place to enjoy a quiet morning walk or an evening sunset.
Camp Store and Recreation Center
Raccoon Holler also offers a well-stocked camp store with many of the basics campers occasionally forget.
Inside you’ll find:
- Snacks
- Cold drinks
- Ice
- Common RV supplies
- Camping necessities
Nearby is the recreation center, where the campground hosts activities such as Saturday evening bingo and Sunday morning church services.
These community events help create a friendly atmosphere, especially for longer stays.
Clean Bathhouses and Laundry
One thing we always appreciate during campground reviews is clean facilities.
Raccoon Holler did not disappoint.
The bathhouses were clean and well maintained throughout our stay.
The showers were spotless and comfortable to use.
The campground also provides a convenient laundry room equipped with two washers and two dryers, making it easy to catch up on laundry while traveling.
Tent Camping and Seasonal Sites
In addition to RV camping, Raccoon Holler offers tent sites tucked into quieter sections of the property.
The campground also has a number of seasonal campers who return year after year.
Everyone we met was friendly and welcoming, helping create a relaxed atmosphere throughout the park.
It’s the kind of campground where people wave as they drive by and stop to chat while walking their dogs.
Perfect for Walking the Dog
General loved this campground.
Wide roads, plenty of grassy areas, shaded walking paths, and quiet surroundings made it one of our favorite places to take him on his daily walks.
For anyone traveling with pets, that’s always a big plus.
Sometimes it’s the little things—like having a peaceful place to stretch your legs—that make a campground especially memorable.
Is It Worth the Higher Price?
Normally, Raccoon Holler costs a little more than we typically budget for camping.
At roughly $40–45 per night during our visit, it wasn’t the least expensive campground we’d stayed in.
However, considering the spacious campsites, excellent maintenance, peaceful setting, and family-friendly amenities, we felt it offered good value.
Would we choose it every single week if we were watching every dollar?
Probably not.
Would we gladly stay there again for a special trip or a holiday weekend?
Absolutely.

Our stay was relaxing from beginning to end.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a peaceful campground near Wilkesboro, North Carolina, Raccoon Holler deserves a spot on your list.
The combination of wooded campsites, generous spacing between RVs, friendly staff, and excellent facilities creates an atmosphere that’s difficult to find at many larger campgrounds.
Even though we originally stayed there simply because other campgrounds were full for Memorial Day weekend, it ended up becoming one of the pleasant surprises of our travels.
Sometimes the places you discover by chance become the ones you remember most.
