Exploring Manistee, Michigan: Beaches, Historic Ships & Lake Michigan Charm
Some places simply surprise you.
We arrived in Manistee, Michigan, expecting a pleasant stop along the shores of Lake Michigan. Instead, we discovered one of our favorite destinations of our entire Michigan adventure.
Beautiful beaches.
Friendly locals.
Historic ships.
A charming downtown.
Excellent restaurants.
And, of course, plenty of opportunities for General to splash in Lake Michigan.
If you’re planning a road trip through western Michigan, here’s why we think Manistee deserves a spot on your itinerary.
First Impressions of Manistee
After settling into our campground, we couldn’t wait to see Lake Michigan.
It had been nearly three months since we’d last spent time at the water, so naturally our first destination was First Street Beach.
The beach itself is beautiful, with wide stretches of sand and stunning views across Lake Michigan.
The only disappointment was discovering that pets aren’t allowed on the main beach.
Fortunately, we soon found another nearby beach where General was welcome to join us.
That turned out to be one of the highlights of our stay.
General Finally Gets to Swim
Sometimes all a dog needs is a little encouragement.
While we were enjoying the beach, three wonderful ladies from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula stopped to chat with us after meeting General.
One of them picked up a stick and tossed it into the lake.
That was all the encouragement General needed.
Within seconds he was happily swimming through the cool waters of Lake Michigan, retrieving sticks and having the time of his life.
We spent quite a while talking with those ladies, who generously shared recommendations for restaurants, scenic drives, places to visit, and even where to find the best night sky viewing in the area.
One of our favorite parts of traveling full-time has always been meeting kind people like them.
Strolling the Manistee Riverwalk
Downtown Manistee is full of character.
One of the best ways to experience it is by walking the Manistee Riverwalk.
The paved walkway follows the river behind many of the downtown shops and restaurants, offering beautiful waterfront views along the way.
Many restaurants have outdoor seating overlooking the river, making it an especially pleasant place to enjoy lunch or simply relax while watching boats pass by.
Combined with the town’s beautifully preserved historic buildings, the Riverwalk creates a wonderfully welcoming atmosphere.
A Great Lunch at Bluefish Kitchen
One recommendation we were especially glad we followed was eating lunch at Bluefish Kitchen + Bar.
The restaurant felt a little more upscale than we usually choose while traveling, but the friendly staff immediately made us feel welcome—even in our shorts and T-shirts.
The highlight of the meal was an incredible hot fish dip.
As former North Carolina residents who loved hot crab dip, that’s saying something.
It was rich, creamy, and absolutely delicious.
If you’re visiting Manistee, Bluefish is well worth considering for lunch or dinner.
Touring the SS City of Milwaukee
One of Manistee’s most unique attractions is the SS City of Milwaukee.
Unlike the automobile ferries most people picture, this historic vessel transported entire railroad cars across Lake Michigan.
Built in 1930, the ship could carry up to 34 loaded railcars between Michigan and Wisconsin.
Today it’s preserved as a museum ship and even offers overnight stays for visitors interested in its reputation as one of Michigan’s haunted attractions.
Although we didn’t take the full guided tour during our visit, simply seeing this remarkable vessel up close was fascinating.
Exploring the Coast Guard Cutter Acacia
Our favorite maritime attraction was the retired U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Acacia.
The self-guided tour gave us an inside look at life aboard a working Coast Guard vessel.
We explored:
- Crew quarters
- Officers’ cabins
- Galley and dining area
- Medical dispensary
- Captain’s quarters
- Navigation bridge
- Chart room
- Upper deck
One volunteer explained that the ship had participated in law enforcement missions near Haiti, where machine guns were mounted on deck while pursuing smugglers and pirates.
Hearing those firsthand stories made the tour especially memorable.
It’s a fascinating attraction for anyone interested in military history or maritime life.
A Quick Bug Spray Comparison
Michigan’s beautiful forests and lakes come with one small drawback.
Mosquitoes.
After trying several different insect repellents during our travels, we compared both natural plant-based sprays and traditional DEET formulas.
Our experience?
The DEET-based spray provided the longest-lasting protection, while the natural version worked reasonably well but required more frequent applications.
If you’re planning to spend time outdoors along Lake Michigan during mosquito season, insect repellent is definitely something you’ll want to pack.
One of the Most Unique Roadside Stands We’ve Seen
Throughout our travels we’ve seen plenty of roadside stands selling fresh eggs, vegetables, and firewood.
Manistee introduced us to something entirely different.
One homeowner had transformed an old truck into a roadside flower stand, selling fresh bouquets on the honor system.
It was such a simple, creative idea.
When we first drove by, only a couple bouquets remained.
By the time we returned later that day, they were completely sold out.
Little discoveries like that are one of the reasons we love exploring small towns.
Why We Loved Manistee
There wasn’t just one thing that made Manistee memorable.
It was everything together.
Beautiful beaches.
Friendly people.
Historic ships.
Excellent restaurants.
Walkable downtown streets.
Lake Michigan sunsets.
It felt relaxed, authentic, and welcoming.
Those are exactly the kinds of places we enjoy discovering during our travels.
Final Thoughts
If you’re planning a Michigan road trip, don’t overlook Manistee.
Whether you’re interested in Great Lakes history, beautiful beaches, waterfront dining, or simply spending a relaxing day exploring a charming lakeside community, this town offers far more than many travelers realize.
We arrived expecting a brief stop.
We left wishing we’d had even more time.
That’s usually the best sign you’ve found somewhere special.
