Wilderness Road Campground Review: RV Camping at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park
When you’re planning a visit to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, choosing the right campground can make all the difference.
During our stay, we spent nearly two weeks at Wilderness Road Campground, giving us plenty of time to explore the campground, hike the trails, use the facilities, and experience what everyday camping is really like.
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. While there were a few minor issues, this remains one of our favorite national park campgrounds thanks to its peaceful setting, excellent hiking, and convenient location.
Here’s everything we learned during our visit.
Easy Check-In
Checking into Wilderness Road Campground couldn’t have been much easier.
The registration process was straightforward, and the campground is well organized.
If you have an America the Beautiful Senior Pass, this is another great place to enjoy its camping discount, making an already affordable campground an even better value.
Dump Station and Basic Services
The campground includes a convenient dump station that’s easy to access whether you’re arriving or leaving.
We appreciated having:
- A spacious dump station
- Fresh water fill
- Tank flushing station
- Plenty of room to maneuver a travel trailer
Everything was clean, simple to use, and well maintained.
Bear-Safe Trash & Recycling
Because the campground is located in bear country, all trash receptacles are bear-resistant.
They take a little extra effort to open, but it’s a small inconvenience that helps protect both campers and wildlife.
We also appreciated seeing recycling stations located throughout the campground—something we don’t always find while traveling.
Campground Layout
The campground is arranged in a large loop with several smaller alphabetized camping loops branching off the main road.
Sites are grouped into sections such as A, B, C, and beyond.
Only certain loops provide electric hookups, while others are more traditional National Park campsites without utilities.
Most campsites include:
- Picnic table
- Fire ring
- Gravel parking pad
- Wooded surroundings
The campground feels spacious without being oversized, making it easy to navigate even with an RV.
Every Campsite Is Different
One thing we quickly noticed is that no two campsites are exactly alike.
Some are:
- Large and open
- Deep enough for longer RVs
- Nicely shaded
- More private
Others are smaller and feature stairways leading down to the picnic table and fire ring.
That variety is one reason we recommend looking carefully at campsite photos when making reservations if possible.
We actually moved sites during our stay and enjoyed trying different parts of the campground.
One Electrical Issue to Know About
The only significant issue we encountered involved several of the campground’s 30-amp electrical pedestals.
Our surge protector consistently showed proper wiring, but the campground breakers would trip almost immediately after plugging in.
After trying several sites—and talking with other campers—we realized we weren’t the only ones experiencing the problem.
Fortunately, there was a simple solution.
Using a 50-amp to 30-amp dogbone adapter allowed us to plug into the 50-amp outlet instead, and everything worked perfectly.
We reported the issue to the National Park Service, so hopefully the affected breakers have since been repaired.
It’s certainly not a reason to avoid the campground, but it’s helpful information for RV travelers.
Amphitheater Programs
Wilderness Road Campground includes a pleasant outdoor amphitheater where park rangers regularly present educational programs.
Topics often include:
- Local wildlife
- Park history
- Nature programs
- Seasonal presentations
Even if you don’t attend a program, it’s a nice gathering place where campers can relax and meet fellow travelers.
A Hiker’s Paradise
If you enjoy hiking, Wilderness Road Campground is hard to beat.
More than 85 miles of hiking trails begin within or near the campground.
Trails range from:
- Easy walks
- Moderate hikes
- Challenging mountain climbs
Because the campground sits inside Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, you can begin exploring almost immediately after leaving your campsite.
It’s one of the campground’s biggest advantages.
Private Shower Facilities
One feature that really impressed us was the shower buildings.
Unlike many public campground bathhouses, each shower room is completely private.
Every room includes:
- Locking door
- Bench
- Coat hooks
- Automatic lighting
- Plenty of space
The facilities were cleaned daily during our visit and remained exceptionally well maintained.
They’re easily among the nicest campground shower facilities we’ve encountered during our travels.
More Than Just Camping
One reason we enjoyed staying here for nearly two weeks is that there’s simply so much to do nearby.
Within the park you’ll find:
- Historic Cumberland Gap
- Pinnacle Overlook
- Tri-State Peak
- Scenic mountain drives
- Cave tours
- Horseback riding trails
- Wildlife viewing
- Historic sites
You can easily spend several days exploring without running out of things to see.
Peaceful Camping
One thing we appreciated most was how quiet the campground felt.
The wooded setting creates a relaxing atmosphere that makes it easy to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
Deer frequently wandered through the campground during our stay, adding to the feeling of being immersed in nature.
It’s exactly the kind of peaceful environment we hope to find in a National Park campground.
Our Final Thoughts
Overall, we would absolutely stay at Wilderness Road Campground again.
The weak 30-amp breakers were a minor inconvenience, but the solution was simple, and every other aspect of the campground more than made up for it.
Beautiful surroundings.
Excellent hiking.
Outstanding shower facilities.
Convenient location.
Friendly atmosphere.
