Celebrating Christmas in Our RV: A Simple Holiday on the Road
One of the questions people often ask us is what it’s like to celebrate the holidays while living full-time in an RV.
The answer?
It’s different—but it’s every bit as meaningful.
You don’t need a large house or a towering Christmas tree to enjoy the season. Sometimes the smallest celebrations become the ones you remember most.
As we settled into another Christmas on the road, we decided to make the most of the limited space inside our travel trailer and create a holiday celebration that reflected both our travels and our personalities.
A Christmas Tree Built for RV Living
Like many things in RV life, our Christmas tree required a little creativity.
Instead of hauling around a full-sized artificial tree, we built one ourselves.
Using a sheet of poster board as the base, we covered it with fabric we’d collected during our travels and created a flat tree that fit perfectly inside the trailer without taking up valuable floor space.
It wasn’t fancy.
It wasn’t expensive.
But it was ours.
And that’s what made it special.
Decorations Filled With Memories
One of our favorite parts of decorating was using items we’d collected along the way.
Among the decorations were colorful Mardi Gras beads we had picked up while visiting the Mardi Gras Museum in Louisiana.
Every ornament and decoration reminded us of another stop on our journey.
Instead of unpacking boxes of decorations we’d used for years, our little tree became a scrapbook of the places we’d already explored.
In many ways, it represented our life on the road perfectly.
The Cactus Tree Topper
Of course, we couldn’t resist adding a little personality.
Rather than a traditional star or angel, we built a cactus-themed tree topper using odds and ends we already had in the trailer.
With tiny lights woven through the cactus skeleton, it became one of our favorite decorations.
It was a fun reminder that Christmas doesn’t have to look exactly the same every year.
Sometimes creating something unique is even more memorable.
Making a Small Space Feel Like Home
Living in a travel trailer teaches you to appreciate simple things.
There isn’t room for oversized decorations or elaborate displays.
Instead, every decoration has to earn its place.
A few strings of lights.
A handmade tree.
Some treasured souvenirs.
And suddenly, a small RV begins to feel wonderfully festive.
That’s one of the things we’ve come to love most about full-time RV living.
You learn that “home” isn’t defined by square footage.
It’s defined by the people—and the memories—you share it with.
Christmas on the Road
One of the greatest surprises of traveling full-time has been discovering how many different ways people celebrate the holidays across America.
Each town has its own traditions.
Each community decorates a little differently.
Every destination adds another memory to our growing collection of Christmas experiences.
While we may not always celebrate in the same place, we’ve found that the spirit of Christmas travels remarkably well.
Looking Back on the Year
As Christmas approached, it gave us an opportunity to reflect on everything we’d experienced during the year.
New states.
Historic sites.
National parks.
Beautiful campgrounds.
Unexpected adventures.
Wonderful people.
Of course, there were also mechanical problems, travel delays, and plenty of lessons learned along the way.
But that’s part of the adventure.
Every challenge becomes another story to tell.

One thing we were especially excited about this Christmas was finally having reliable internet service again after spending more than a month with very limited access.
