Friday, December 20, 2019 -- Ed had only gotten to use our portable waste tank twice before one of the wheels fell apart!
Although we had used the tank several times during our travels (since buying it in Kentucky), it must not have liked this road here at La Posa South in Quartzsite.
When Ed took the wheel off, he realized that the spokes on the inside were hollow, and could not take the load the tank was supposed to have been built for.
So he filled the hollow places with small stones, and got some JB Weld for plastic to seal everything back together.
But he knew this was only a temporary solution, and we would need to figure out something else.

So... Quartzsite has an interesting problem, that we really had NOT experienced before since we started traveling. They have a large number of Panhandlers, who hang outside of stores, and beg for money. We tried to help those who seemed very sincere. And at first we were disturbed by the signs around Quartzsite, telling people to not give them money!
Visiting the website, and reading about what the town does, did not really make us feel any better. But within a few days, Ed started to experience some things that changed our minds about this subject! First, he saw a young guy at Tyson Wells, sitting on the ground and playing guitar. He had a "need work" sign sitting next to him. A gentleman walked up to the guy, told him he had some work working on the roof of his camper. The guy said that really wasn't something he felt he could do. Then the gentleman said he needed some help cleaning up some debris in his yard. The guy said he was not interested. Really made us start to think.
Next, we were at the gas station getting our propane tanks filled, and paying our bill. Ed witnessed a young guy sitting outside on the sidewalk (a panhandler), who then came into the store, whipped out a very thick wad of cash, and purchased a pack of cigarettes and a bottle of liquor.
Our third experience was with a young guy who claimed he and his wife were only in town for a couple days, that they were stuck there, and just needed a few dollars to get something to eat. Ed ran into this guy one week, and then about 10 days later, I ran into the same guy with the same story.
So... our conclusion, right or wrong, was that we were very blessed to have these experiences that set us straight on the panhandling issue. And we no longer give them money, since it seems most of them make more money than we do. Although we do still feel sorry for them, that they have chosen this way of life for themselves.
Another beautiful desert sunset!
Saturday, December 21, 2019 -- Ed put out a hummingbird feeder, which was almost an instant success. We had hummingbirds that very same day, and the numbers continually grew over the coming weeks! Ed has always been fascinated that there seems to be only one breed of hummingbird east of the Mississippi. But the west has several different breeds. And the colors we were seeing were absolutely beautiful!

The QIA (Quartzsite Improvement Association) was having a Cajun Christmas Dinner, so we decided to attend, thinking that we might meet some nice folks. The QIA is actually a pretty awesome organization, and they hold special events regularly throughout the winter season. They have exercise classes, dance classes (Square Dance, Round Dance (historical) and Line Dance), concerts, dinners, and all sorts of other things. They publish a monthly calendar of events, which is distributed throughout the town, and is also available on their website.
They have this quilt hanging on the wall, which features Quartzsite t-shirts that were collected over several years!
And they have some awesome paintings in their dining room area!
Monday, December 23, 2019 -- This campground is still pretty quiet. Here is the view behind us, from our patio.
And here is the view in front of us, across the street.

We have a very curious Roadrunner, who walks right up to our patio!
Our next door neighbor, Bob, has been coming here for 15 years. He has been a wealth of information, and very helpful to us! We are very blessed to have pulled in right next to him! Bob says that he has seen people feeding the Roadrunner hamburger, and all sorts of other things. So this little guy keeps coming up to our patio looking for food! After doing some research, we found that Roadrunners are carnivorous! They actually kill and eat Rattlesnakes! I would have never thought that!
