Homeplace Park Campground Review: A Great Basecamp for Pilot Mountain & Mayberry
If you’re planning to visit Pilot Mountain State Park or spend a day exploring Mount Airy, North Carolina—better known as the inspiration for Mayberry—you’ll need a comfortable place to stay.
During our travels through northwestern North Carolina, we spent a week at Homeplace Park Campground in Ararat, and it proved to be an excellent basecamp for exploring the area.
With peaceful creekside campsites, a beautiful waterfall, family-friendly activities, and affordable weekly rates, it offers much more than just a place to park your RV.
Here’s what we found during our stay.
An Excellent Location
One of the campground’s biggest strengths is its location.
Homeplace Park sits almost exactly halfway between Pilot Mountain and Mount Airy, making it easy to visit both attractions without spending hours driving each day.
Whether you’re planning to hike Pilot Mountain, tour the Andy Griffith Museum, or simply enjoy the scenic countryside, the campground is perfectly positioned for day trips.
Creekside Campsites
Our favorite feature of the campground was easily the creek.
We were fortunate enough to stay in one of the premium creekside sites, where our trailer overlooked a gently flowing stream and a small waterfall.
Listening to the water throughout the day created a wonderfully relaxing atmosphere.
If the weather had been a little cooler, we would have loved sleeping with the windows open just to hear the creek all night long.
It’s one of those simple pleasures that makes camping so enjoyable.
Campsites and Layout
Homeplace Park offers a variety of camping options.
During our visit we noticed:
- Premium creekside RV sites
- Overnight RV sites
- Walk-in campsites
- Tent camping areas
- Seasonal campsites with permanent setups
Many of the seasonal campers had built attractive decks beside their RVs, giving the campground a friendly neighborhood feel.
The overnight section felt spacious without being crowded.
Affordable Camping
We were pleasantly surprised by the pricing.
At the time of our stay:
- Overnight camping: $30 per night
- Weekly special: Stay six nights and receive the seventh night free
That made the campground an excellent value, especially considering the number of amenities available.
A Huge Swimming Pool
One thing you immediately notice upon entering the campground is the enormous swimming pool.
The pool isn’t just for campers.
Local residents can also purchase seasonal passes, making it a popular gathering place during the summer.
Although the pool wasn’t open during our stay, it was easy to see why families would enjoy spending an afternoon there.
Mini Golf and Family Fun
Homeplace Park offers far more activities than many privately owned campgrounds.
Among the amenities we found were:
- Full 18-hole miniature golf course
- Large playgrounds
- Picnic shelters
- Bingo hall
- Fishing pond
- Walking areas
The beautifully landscaped mini golf course winds around flowers, ponds, and gentle hills, making it enjoyable even if you’re simply walking through.
Fishing Pond and Waterfall
The campground’s pond adds another peaceful setting for relaxing outdoors.
Fishing is permitted with a campground permit, although it’s catch-and-release only.
Nearby, the creek flows over a picturesque waterfall that quickly became one of our favorite spots in the campground.
Watching the water tumble over the rocks while listening to the gentle sounds of the creek created a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.
It’s hard not to slow down and enjoy moments like that.
Clean Facilities
The campground provides multiple bathhouses throughout the property.
During our visit, we found them to be clean and well maintained.
Each bathhouse includes showers, and one also offered a washer and dryer.
Laundry was inexpensive and convenient, making it easy to stay on top of chores during a longer visit.
Seasonal Camping Community
Unlike many campgrounds that serve only overnight travelers, Homeplace Park has a large seasonal camping community.
Golf carts moved quietly throughout the park during the day, and families clearly knew one another well.
Despite the activity, the campground remained surprisingly peaceful.
Everyone seemed friendly, and evenings were quiet.
What About the Noise?
Before arriving, we’d read several online reviews mentioning noise from the swimming pool.
Because the pool didn’t open until the day after we left, we can’t personally comment on how busy it becomes during peak season.
However, if you’re concerned about potential noise, there are several campsites farther away from the pool near the upper portion of the campground that would likely be quieter.
It’s nice to have options depending on your camping style.

Final Thoughts
If you’re searching for a campground near Pilot Mountain or Mount Airy, Homeplace Park deserves serious consideration.
Its combination of location, affordability, family activities, and peaceful creekside setting makes it one of the better values we found while traveling through North Carolina.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or a week of exploring the region, this campground provides an excellent place to relax after each day’s adventures.
