Big Travel Day from Bouse AZ to Tonopah NV (Part 2)!

Sunday, April 26, 2020 (continued) — Next we passed by Creech Air Force Base in the very small town of Indian Springs. They don’t even have a gas station there! LOL.

Creech AFB started testing remotely piloted aircraft back in 1996!

Now it houses the 432nd Wing and 432nd Air Expeditionary Wing, with a total workforce of 3000 people!

Next, we passed the very small town of Mercury. Most folks will never see this small town, because it belongs to the Nevada National Security Site, and you need special clearance to get in the gate!

In my efforts to find out more about this area, I found they do give tours of the site once a month. The tour bus leaves from Las Vegas, and you are not allowed to take cameras or cell phones on the bus with you!

Among other things, this area was once used by the government to test nuclear weapons. Now it is used for the National Stockpile. The road just seems to go on forever, off into oblivion. You can see more of the area on Google Maps. We found this area very interesting!

More beautiful Nevada mountains!

Each and every one is different, with different features and different colors! It’s just amazing to see so many variations in such close proximity to each other!

Next we came across the Area 51 Alien Center in Amargosa Valley! Just a gift shop really, with some pretty crazy gifts, but still interesting!

And right next to the Alien 51 Center is the Alien Cathouse Brothel! Permanently closed… of course. But very interesting that such pleasures existed up until fairly recently!

Looks like they have been doing some mining on this mountain! Wow! What an amazing maroon color! I wonder what they are mining for?

You can almost look at this mountain and see that it came out of the earth sideways!

We drove thru the small town of Beatty. Here the Amargosa River comes up to the surface for just a few miles, then goes back underground!

Once we got closer to Goldfield, we started seeing hundreds of Joshua Trees! They were everywhere! And just a couple miles north of Goldfield, they disappeared again!

They have been mining this mountain too! It has road tracks all over it! Good Lord! LOL.

We finally made it to Tonopah! Whew! What should have taken us 6.5 hours, ended up taking us 9.5 hours. What a long day! And our very first true Boondocking spot! Not the greatest place, but certainly do-able!

When we got to Tonopah, Ed started working on his night sky photography, and took this awesome shot of the Moon over the mountain we were camping in front of, with Saturn off to the right!
