Friday, January 31, 2020 (continued) — We had spent the last six weeks, since we got to Quartzsite, trying to figure out what we wanted to do to save on our energy/propane costs.
We were actually seriously leaning toward a small wind turbine. But the more we read, the more we were turned off, since folks seemed to be talking alot about the noise and vibration of it. And that it hardly works unless the wind is more than 14 mph. So… solar it is. And again, since getting up on the roof regularly is not an option for us. It was an easy decision to choose the Zamp Solar Portable Panel. So, we headed into town, first to Solar Bill’s. They have an awesome Parrot outside!
But the service was actually quite poor. We spoke with a lady salesperson, and she gave us the price on the solar panel system we wanted, but seemed put out that we weren’t interested in getting our entire roof covered. So then we went to Discount Solar on the other end of town. Turns out, their price was better even than Amazon, and the salesperson was very thorough in asking how much energy we use. He suggested a bigger panel than what we had intended to buy. Not just trying to upsell, but he was actually right, the smaller one would not have worked quite so well for us. So we bought it! And when we got it home, Ed jigger wired it up to our battery so we could try it out right away! We were very happy!
Saturday, February 1, 2020 — The next day, Ed spent the morning getting the solar panel wired up properly. We had gotten an extension cord, so we can put the panel quite a ways away from the trailer.
And he wired in this quick connect onto our battery, so we can easily plug and unplug the panel without having to open the battery box!

Wednesday, February 5, 2020 — Another totally awesome Arizona Desert Sunset!
Friday, February 7, 2020 — Today we decided to go out exploring again for something in the Stone Cabins book — the Spanish Wall. And once again, the directions in the book did not help us. We were not able to find the Spanish Wall at all!
After being frustrated twice now with this book, I decided to try something different. I found on the Quartzsite Offroad Club’s website, they have a map book that they sell, but they also have scans of 3 pages from that book that have Points of Interest, with GPS coordinates. So I spent the entire evening, entering all of these onto Google Maps, which in turn synced with my phone. So now I have the entire list of Points of Interest available to me whenever we get the urge to explore! And we went out again the very next day!
Saturday, February 8, 2020 — Today we decided to look for the Petroglyphs and Gringing Holes, and we found them easily. We weren’t able to drive all the way there, so it was a short walk, but well worth it!
These Petroglyphs were on a stone wall that was right next to a fairly large wash. We already knew that there was more water in this area way back then. So there must have been a tribe of Indians living right near this wash.

These Petroglyphs were really amazing!
And the grinding holes were just as awesome! They were on another very large rock, on the opposite side of the wash from where the Petroglyphs were. There were five of them, some much deeper than others.
So the women of the tribe would sit up here on this rock for a good part of their day, just grinding the Palo Verde pods into grain for bread. Amazing!
We finally decided to check to see exactly how far away from home we are! People keep asking us, and we never had an answer for them, until now! Exactly 2591 miles!!
